I now pronounce you...

... President and First Lady! On Tuesday evening, Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America, making him the first African-American President-elect in our country's history. November 4, 2008 will go down in the history books as an important step for the Democratic political party, a great inspiration to all citizens, and a huge victory for African-Americans.

As Senator McCain stated in his concession speech:
“This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight... We both realize that we have come a long way from the injustices that once stained our nation’s reputation.”

Now of course Mr. Obama's race is not what qualified him to be President of the United States, and I can say with confidence that his race will not be the extent of his legacy. Different folks have different opinions, and that is one of the biggest privileges of this country - that as individuals we are free to express ourselves as we wish, and as a nation we support healthy competition as the vehicle for change and innovation. I realize not everyone voted for Barack Obama, but now that he has been named the President-Elect under the same democratic process our nation has held for the last 200+ years, he is just as responsible for ensuring a bright future for his opponents as he will for his supporters. One of my favorite lines from Barack Obama's victory speech was: “To those Americans whose support I have yet to earn. I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your president, too.”

I bet you're wondering what this has to do with our blog? Well, the most obvious answer is the fact that Shep and I are both voting citizens of the United States. But, there is another connection. Before Barack Obama became President-Elect or even Senator, he was a husband.

Michelle and Barack Obama married on October 3, 1992. Last month when Mr. Obama was asked for his thoughts on how to maintain a marriage for 16 years he suggested, "a sense of humor, listening and never get so mad that you forget why you love them".

I'd say that's pretty great advice, Mr. President-Elect! Thanks for sharing those words of wisdom. :)
